Hi, I’m Tony from Keystone Comfort Solutions. One question I get asked from time to time is, “Can I service my own boiler?” And it’s a fair one — especially if you’re handy around the house and looking to save a bit of money.

The short answer is: you can carry out a few basic checks yourself, but when it comes to a full boiler service, legally and safely, it needs to be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

What You Can Safely Do Yourself

There are a few things I often recommend homeowners keep an eye on between annual services. These simple checks can help keep your boiler running smoothly and might even prevent a bigger issue down the line:

  • Check your boiler pressure – It should be between 1.0 and 2.0 bar when cold. You can top it up using the filling loop if it drops.
  • Bleed your radiators – If they’re cold at the top and warm at the bottom, they might have trapped air. Bleeding them with a radiator key can help restore proper heat flow.
  • Keep the area around your boiler clear – Make sure there’s nothing blocking airflow around your boiler, especially if it’s in a cupboard.
  • Check for leaks or unusual noises – A noisy boiler or a visible leak is a sign something’s wrong and should be looked at by a pro.

What You Should Not Do

Servicing your boiler properly involves opening it up, checking internal components, testing for gas leaks, combustion levels, and more. This kind of work absolutely must be done by someone who’s Gas Safe registered — like myself.

Why? Because working with gas appliances carries serious risks, including:

  • Gas leaks
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Fire or explosion risks
  • Voiding your manufacturer’s warranty

In fact, it’s illegal in the UK for anyone who isn’t Gas Safe registered to carry out gas appliance servicing. It’s just not worth the risk.

What Happens During a Proper Boiler Service?

A full boiler service is more than just a quick look-over. When I carry out a service, I typically do the following:

  • Check gas pressure and flow
  • Inspect and clean internal components like the burner and heat exchanger
  • Test flue emissions and ventilation
  • Ensure safety devices are functioning properly
  • Check for leaks, corrosion, and wear
  • Make sure your boiler is running efficiently

I also keep a record of the service, which helps with future maintenance and keeps your warranty valid if applicable.

So, What’s the Verdict?

If you’re wondering whether you can service your own boiler — the safest and smartest answer is: leave it to the pros. While it’s great to do some light maintenance and keep an eye on things, the actual service should be done by a qualified engineer once a year.

It’s not just about ticking a box — it’s about protecting your home, your family, and your peace of mind.
