Combi, System, or Conventional – Which One Should You Choose?
Hi, I’m Tony from Keystone Comfort Solutions.
If your boiler is not heating your water or radiators properly and you’re thunking about replacing your boiler or moving into a new home and wondering which type of boiler is best, you’re not alone. There are a few different types available, and the best one for you depends on the size of your home, how many bathrooms you have, and how much hot water your household uses. If you’d like expert advice or installation help, take a look at our boiler services in Chipstead to see how we can help you choose the right system for your home.
Let’s break it down so you can get a better idea of what might work best for your household.
Combi Boilers (Combination Boilers)
Best for: Smaller homes or flats with 1 bathroom
Combi boilers are the most popular choice in the UK — and for good reason. They don’t need a separate hot water cylinder or cold water tank. Instead, they heat water directly from the mains when you turn on the tap.
Pros:
- Compact and space-saving
- Great energy efficiency — you only heat what you use
- Lower installation cost
Cons:
- Not ideal for homes with multiple bathrooms
- Flow rate may drop if multiple taps/showers are used at once
If you live in a flat or a smaller house and don’t have high hot water demands, a combi boiler is usually the way to go.
System Boilers
Best for: Medium to large homes with more than one bathroom
System boilers use a separate hot water cylinder (usually in an airing cupboard) but don’t need a cold water tank in the loft. They can supply hot water to multiple taps at once without pressure drops.
Pros:
- Good for larger households with higher hot water usage
- More efficient than conventional boilers
- Compact compared to regular systems
Cons:
- Still takes up space due to the hot water cylinder
- You have to wait for the water to reheat once it runs out
I often recommend system boilers to families or homes with two or more bathrooms where a combi just wouldn’t keep up.
Conventional Boilers (Regular or Heat-Only)
Best for: Larger homes or properties with old heating systems
These are the traditional style boilers that work with a hot water cylinder and a cold water tank in the loft. They’re great for properties with older pipework or if you already have this setup in place.
Pros:
- Can supply lots of hot water to multiple taps at once
- Works well with older radiators
Cons:
- Takes up the most space
- Hot water isn’t always instant
- Less efficient than combi or system boilers
These are best kept for larger or period homes where changing to a different type of boiler might mean a major overhaul of the heating system.
So, Which One Is Right for You?
Here’s a quick rule of thumb I often share with customers:
- 1-2 bedroom home with 1 bathroom? Go for a combi.
- 3-4 bedroom home with 2+ bathrooms? A system boiler is likely your best option.
- Older property with an existing tank and cylinder setup? A conventional boiler may be the most practical solution.
Of course, every home is different. If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to pop over, take a look at your setup, and help you choose the right option based on your needs and budget.
