Hi, I’m Tony from Keystone Comfort Solutions. If you’ve noticed your boiler isn’t heating your water or radiators like it used to, you’re definitely not alone. I’ve seen this issue come up all the time for homeowners, especially when the weather turns colder. The good news is, there’s usually a clear reason behind it — and in many cases, a fairly straightforward fix.
Let me walk you through some of the most common causes I come across when boilers aren’t doing what they should.
Air in the Radiators
If your radiators are cold at the top but warm at the bottom, there’s a good chance it’s just air trapped inside. This stops the hot water from circulating properly.
You can bleed the radiators yourself with a radiator key, or if you’re unsure, I can take care of it during a quick visit as part of my boiler services in Epsom. It’s a simple job that can make a big difference to how well your heating works. Check out Radiator Not Working? My Step-by-Step Guide to a Warmer Home
Low Boiler Pressure
This is one of the first things I check. If the pressure drops too low, your boiler won’t be able to push hot water through the system properly. You might get weak heating or no hot water at all.
Most boilers should sit between 1.0 and 2.0 bar when they’re cold. You can usually top up the pressure yourself using the filling loop underneath the boiler, but if it keeps dropping, it’s best to have it looked at. It could be a leak or a faulty part.
Faulty Diverter Valve
For those of you with a combi boiler, the diverter valve decides whether the hot water goes to your taps or your radiators. If this valve gets stuck or fails, you might only get heat in one place but not the other.
If your radiators are stone cold but your tap water is piping hot (or the other way around), there’s a good chance the diverter valve is the issue. This is something I’d need to repair or replace for you.
Thermostat Issues
It might sound simple, but I’ve been to plenty of jobs where the thermostat was the culprit. If it’s not reading the room temperature correctly or isn’t responding, your boiler may not fire up when you need it to.
Try turning it up a few degrees and see if the boiler kicks in. If it doesn’t, the thermostat might need replacing or recalibrating.
Error Codes and Fault Messages
Modern boilers are pretty good at letting you know something’s wrong. If yours is showing an error code or flashing lights, that’s its way of asking for help.
If you’ve got the manual handy, you can look up what the code means, but feel free to give me a ring and I’ll talk you through it or arrange to pop by and take a look.
Sludge or Blockages in the System
Over time, heating systems can get clogged up with sludge — that’s a mix of rust, dirt and debris that builds up inside the pipes and radiators. It can really reduce how well the system works and stop your radiators from getting fully hot.
I often recommend a system flush in these cases to clear everything out and get the hot water flowing freely again.
Pump Problems
If the boiler’s pump isn’t working properly, the hot water won’t circulate through the system. This usually results in either completely cold radiators or heat that’s very patchy throughout the house.
Pump issues are best handled by a qualified engineer, as they often need replacing or professional adjustment.
When to Call a Professional
If you’ve tried the basics (check out Can I Service My Own Boiler and still aren’t getting the heating or hot water you need, it’s time to get it checked properly. Ignoring the problem could lead to a complete breakdown or more expensive boiler repairs down the line.
At Keystone Comfort Solutions, I take pride in helping local homeowners get their heating back on quickly and safely. Whether it’s a small fix or something more involved, I’ll give you honest advice and make sure the job’s done right.
